Deep in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon, the rainforest is the medicine cabinet. Many acres of endangered plants stand protected, thanks to the esprit de corps of 250 Calgarians at the Friends of the Rainforest, Banquet for the Amazon, at the Palliser Crystal Ballroom.

A simple medicinal formula to stop the destruction is still to be found, but $15,000 raised ensures that 103 acres of threatened forest adjacent to a key biological reserve, rich with medicinal plants will be protected.

With the Earth's rainforest shrinking at 100 acres per minute, evening guest speaker Dr. José Cabanillas of Peru expressed urgency in reclaiming land from loggers. The founder of the 2,200 hectare Isula Biological Preserve in Peru's Amazon Basin has joined forces with Medicinal Plant Products President, Brad Clarke of Calgary to market new healing formulas to North America.

Calgary Regional Health Authority vice-chairwoman Phyllis Kane emceed the fund raising event, attended by world-renowned complementary medical experts Dr. Steven K.H. Aung, and Dr. Badri Rickhi, as well as business leaders B.J. Seaman, Ron Green and Lorne Gordon.

Mayor Al Duerr joined his wife, Kit Chan, for an authentic Peruvian feast and exuberant live auctioneering by Bill Brown of such exotic fare as drums carved from trunks of naturally fallen Amazonian cedar.

Dr. José Cabanillas honors the interconnectedness of our planet. His spirit of healing goes beyond the hometown. For encouraging a prosperous global heritage, I name José Cabanillas Bright Light of the Week.
